It consists of two buildings linked by a long footbridge over East River. This project intends to open up again the stretch of water, which is today silted up, in the area called “Peck Slip”. The smaller building, set in “Peck Slip” houses two services, the “day care center” and the “counceling center”.
The entrance by land is in this building whereas, the one by river, is located at the opposite end of the pier.
The footbridge leads to the second larger building which houses the other services (library, gallery, exibition space…) and finishes at the “sanctuary space” and the “meditation garden”.
The “sanctuary space” has been thought of as a high, empty room, illuminated by a zenith light; the “meditation garden” as a large square, communicating with the “sanctuary space”, which opens onto the river.
This project has been fundamentally inspired by two icons: the floating church that was the seat of the “Seamen’s Chuch Institute” and the lancet arches of the Brooklyn Bridge.
The overall “sail shape” of the two buildings recalls the old port of New York and pays homage to it.
